If you have a low participation score, you can gain extra credit by completing the following assignment:
Students may increase their participation points by up to 10 points (not to exceed a maximum total of 25 points) by completing the following assignment. Make and submit a short video (1-3 minutes) of yourself reading a reflection that you write (and also submit). In your reflection, you should discuss what behaviors you believe resulted in lost participation points in English class in term 3. Possible reasons include tardiness for class, coming unprepared with class materials, calling out in class, causing disruptions to class, treating others unkindly or with disrespect, being dishonest, failing to respect class materials, speaking in a language other than English, etc. Discuss what might have led you to do these behaviors, what problems they create for you and/or others, and what you intend to do to change these behaviors. Points will be awarded based on how accurately you reflect on your behavior and how thoughtfully you consider ways to change. If you wish, see Mrs. Gaunt during snack, break, or before or after school to get ideas for what might have led you to lose points. Let me know in advance as I can be hard to find! NOTE: If you create the video online, for example with YouTube, be sure that the video is private, not available to anyone who searches for it. Then, share a link with me. TUCK EVERLASTING POST-READING ACTIVITIES
Due Wednesday, March 16, 2016 You MUST choose ONE of the activities to complete based on Tuck Everlasting. Each project is worth 50 points as a test grade, so do your best work. All projects must be in final draft quality upon completion (neat, typed/pen, colored, complete, and abide by the guidelines). 1. Create a mural, collage, or diorama of a scene from the book. You may want to do one based on the description of the Tucks’ house in Chapter 10 or any other scene you choose. Include a one-page description of the scene and how you created your art piece. 2. A “realia” box contains real things that might be important to a story. Collect 10 items to place in a Tuck Everlasting box that you create. Write about each item and the significance to the story. Be sure your box is decorated to reflect the story. 3. Write a chapter telling about the further adventures of the Tuck family. Your chapter should be a minimum of 2 pages long and include at least one colored illustration. 4. Draw a map of Treegap and its surroundings. Label each item on the map and color the map. Include a map key, locator, and compass rose, based on the description in the book. Write about what happened in the book at each location on your map. 5. Write an advertisement for magic water that the man in the yellow suit might have sold. Include an illustration and write a script for a radio or TV ad. You will perform or play this in class. 6. Write a diary that Winnie might have kept for three days around (before, on, after) the day that an important incident in the book occurred. Create a booklet to put the diary pages in. Each entry should be at least one page long. 7. Make a crossword puzzle using vocabulary words from the book. Use vocabulary words from the book that you have learned (minimum of 20 words). You MUST use your own definitions for clues, not just the words. Submit two copies, one original (blank) and one answer key. 8. Design a new book jacket for Tuck Everlasting. Put the title, author, and an illustration on the front cover. Write a one-page summary of the book for the back cover that will encourage others to read the book. For the inside flaps, write a short summary about Natalie Babbitt and at least 3 made-up “quotes” from book reviewers. 9. Write a different ending for the story. It should be a minimum of 2 pages long and include at least one colored illustration. 10. Write one scene/chapter from the point of view of one character in the book. It should be a minimum of 2 pages long and include at least one colored illustration. 11. Design a travel brochure that would entice tourists to visit Treegap. Include positive features, pictures, things to do, places to stay, special activities, maps, advertisements/endorsements We will spend Wednesday's lesson planning our Metaphor poem. The first draft of this will be due on Thursday February 25th. If you have lost your packet, you can download another copy here.
You need to have an original, published (neatly hand written with a hand drawn picture) haiku and cinquain by Thursday February 4th. For the handouts containing rules and examples, please see below.

http://mrjeffreyphillips.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/69961781/tuck-everlasting-study-guide2.pdf This handout was given in class. Please complete it with your color picture and haiku poem for Monday. If you have lost it, you can print another here.
In class, we have been looking at adding detail and description to your writing. The homework assignment is to take a list of events, briefly described on the handout, and add description. Your finished piece show be about 250 words long. Do not add further events to the story. The focus of the homework is to ad detail to improve the start of an existing story, not to complete it. The DRAFT of your story is due on Friday, January 15th. This should be done in your notebook, or printed if you'd prefer. If you chose to print, you must have a hard copy in class on Friday. If your printer doesn't work, do not type your work! Here is a copy of the handout I have in class in case you have lost yours.
